What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Laser skin resurfacing at Wahine Health is a noninvasive aesthetic treatment that utilizes pulsating beams of light to eliminate damaged skin cells one layer at a time. The procedure is great for correcting facial wrinkles and lines and for improving skin blemishes, including pigmentation, acne scars, and other issues. Sometimes referred to as a laser peel, laser skin resurfacing is considered an effective facial treatment for patients who want clearer, softer, youthful-looking skin. Based on the condition of the skin type, the laser can be adjusted for the best results. There is little downtime associated with most laser skin resurfacing facials. During the consultation, any concerns or questions may be reviewed with Dr. Carrie Giordano.

Am I a Candidate for Laser Skin Resurfacing?

When selecting which kind of laser skin resurfacing treatment is right for your needs, you have multiple factors to consider. Laser skin resurfacing is ideal for patients unhappy with their skin's appearance. If you see sun-damaged skin, age spots, acne scars, wrinkles and fine lines, pigmentation, or redness concerns, a laser skin resurfacing procedure can be needed to correct these complexion blemishes. In addition, laser skin resurfacing works wonders if you have a rough texture, scaly patches, or other irregularities. Laser skin resurfacing is not recommended for anyone with dark skin or active acne outbreaks. Also, it's important to understand that there is downtime associated with this laser therapy. Based on their skin condition, some patients may need up to 2 – 3 weeks to recover.

How Does Laser Skin Resurfacing Work?

When you have a more intense or deeper laser resurfacing treatment, you may be given a retinoid cream for a few weeks before your laser procedure. This helps prepare the skin for more effective results. Medication may be suggested prior to the procedure to help reduce discomfort for greater relaxation during your session. If your complexion needs mild improvement, topical anesthesia may be applied to numb treated areas where the laser will target. For the full face or deeper laser treatments, some type of sedation may be used. During the procedure, you will relax in our special treatment chair while the laser passes over the skin, directly targeting the specific areas for resurfacing. You will feel heat from the laser, followed by cold air from the built-in cooling system. The laser works to remove dead and damaged skin cells while also prompting new collagen production.

Following lighter resurfacing sessions, a healing ointment will be applied to the treated skin, and you can go home to recover. The treated skin will appear red, with some irritation and swelling. This should subside within a couple of days, and the skin peeling process will occur over a 3 – 5-day period. For those who are receiving a more intense laser treatment, your recovery time will take longer. The treatment areas will most likely be covered by dressings, and the irritation, burning, and swelling symptoms may be more intense. Medication can be prescribed to lessen these symptoms. The downtime associated with a more intense laser skin resurfacing procedure may last several weeks. Patients should limit their UV exposure after their laser appointment and use sun protection frequently. For all laser treatments, the treated skin will naturally crust, flake, and peel away. It is important to avoid picking at the skin during the recovery process to prevent scarring and to shield the treated area from environmental exposure. After the peeling process has been completed, your skin should feel smoother while looking clearer, rejuvenated, and younger.

About Us
What's the best type of resurfacing for me?

Dr. Giordano or a team member can help you choose which resurfacing option is best for your concerns and goals during your consultation. The best treatment for you will depend on the health and condition of your skin, any skin issues, and the skin depth you want your treatment to reach. How long you are willing to give your recovery may also be an essential factor when choosing your treatment type. When unsure, it's best to try a lighter treatment, assess your outcomes, and adjust as needed for your next treatment.

How can I help my skin recover after a resurfacing treatment?

Dr. Giordano or someone on her staff will talk to you about how you can help your skin heal following your resurfacing treatment. The most important rule is don't pick or peel your skin. This could create lasting damage like scars. You need to forgo all hair removal methods on the treated skin, which includes shaving, waxing, or depilatory creams. We can recommend an ointment to help soothe and heal treated areas.

How often should I get laser resurfacing treatments?

Depending on the resurfacing options you and the Wahine Health team choose for your treatment, you might need to wait weeks or even a few months between appointments. Deep treatments will give you results that last a long time; however, they will need a more extended recovery period. You should talk to Dr. Giordano or another team member about how often you are willing to come back for appointments so they can consider this when suggesting a type of resurfacing in your initial consultation.
